Rashad Cassim

Rashad Cassim joined Statistics South Africa as head and deputy director general: economic statistics in 2006. For the three years previous to taking up this position, Cassim had been head of the School of Economics and Business Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand.

Before he joined Wits, Cassim was the executive director of TIPS. He still serves as a member on the TIPS Board of Directors and Members. Previously he was Director of the Trade Policy Monitoring Project at the University of Cape Town, as well as a researcher in the Development Policy Research Unit (DPRU) at UCT, where he was co-editor of a quarterly bulletin, the Trade Monitor.

His main research interests are in the area of Regional Economic Integration, South Africa and the World Trade Organisation, and general trade policy issues. Cassim holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Cape Town.
