The Millennium Development Goals represent a united international commitment to reduce poverty by 2015. Achieving the Goals will depend upon a coherent international approach, with agreed policies to support development and effective collaboration between institutions and nations. The Department for International Development (DFID) - the part of the UK Government that manages Britain's aid to poor countries and works to get rid of extreme poverty - attaches great importance to its role within this system. In addition to its work as a bilateral donor to individual countries, 38% of total DFID development assistance funding goes through multilateral agencies. Effective engagement of all these parts of the international system is needed if the Millennium Development Goals are to be met.
The first phase of Making Markets Work Better for the Poor project (M4P) was officially completed on December 31st 2007. The proposed second phase of the project (M4P2) is expected to commence implementation in March-April 2008. During the period between the first and second phases of M4P, an interim project coordination unit will be operating in the ADB Vietnam Resident Mission. The Regoverning Markets programme has been established to provide that research and support. A programe brochure is available for downloading, as well as programme publications.
