The success of the Southern African agribusiness sector hinges on its ability to incorporate the many small-scale farmers working at the periphery of the formal market. One of the gaps ComMark has identified is the failure of the private sector to recognize the commercial potential of this neglected group. One of our objectives to is connect big business with emerging farmers.

ComMark's Eastern Cape Red Meat Project Wins the Southern Africa Trust/Mail & Guardian Drivers of Change Business Award 2009

The Drivers of Change Award has been established by the Southern Africa Trust, in partnership with the Mail & Guardian newspaper, to hold up living examples of innovative practices, inclusive attitudes and effective processes that build social trust and create the best conditions to make a real and lasting difference in the lives of people living in poverty.

The award recognises individuals or organisations from across the southern Africa region that are making a real impact, especially in developing effective public policies and strategies, to overcome poverty.

Leveraging Partnerships and Maximising Skills in the Eastern Cape

The purpose of the Eastern Cape Red Meat Project (ECRMP) is to enable communal and emerging farmers to participate more fully in formal red meat markets. Toward this goal ComMark has drafted two new Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture (ECDA). As ComMark, the ARC and the ECDA share strategic interests in the promotion and development of emerging and communal cattle farmers in the Eastern Cape, these partnerships make development sense.

Second Crop of Organic Cotton Harvested in South Africa

South Africa’s second commercial-scale certified organic cotton crop has just been harvested at three commercial farmer field trial sites in Limpopo and one in the Marble Hall area in Mpumalanga. Eleven small-scale farmers in the Nonakeng area also participated in the field trials this year. This second harvest of organically grown cotton in South Africa puts us a step closer to our goal. read more...
