Eastern Cape Red Meat Project

"The main objective of the livestock programme was to increase the income of communal cattle farmers by assisting them to realise higher prices for their cattle. The programme is so successful, it’s going to be replicated in other District Municipalities. They say that we’re miles ahead."

By exposing farmers to information about grading, classification, market systems and abattoir procedures, ComMark has ensured the access of emerging farmers to formal markets and given them the opportunity to benefit from higher prices and added value for their products. A market approach to the red meat subsector is now on the agenda of the Department of Agriculture.

The Eastern Cape Red Meat Project’s Custom Feeding Programme was officially launched on 11 June 2008. It served as a training seminar for local farmers, giving them clear practical examples and advice about how to produce a marketable animal. The launch was very well attended, with representatives from national, provincial and local departments of agriculture, the Agricultural Research Councl (ARC) and the National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC). In addition, farmer delegations from the Northern Cape, Alfred Nzo District and OR Tambo district attended.

Case Studies and Success Stories

An analysis of the livestock sub-sector confirmed that most communal farmers keep cattle for a variety of reasons, which often do not include their potential for a steady financial income. The main objective of this programme is to increase the income of communal cattle farmers by assisting them to realise higher prices for their cattle – through information around grading, classification, market systems and abattoir procedures, and the facilitation of access to formal markets.

Leveraging Partnerships and Maximising Skills in the Eastern Cape

The purpose of the Eastern Cape Red Meat Project (ECRMP) is to enable communal and emerging farmers to participate more fully in formal red meat markets. Toward this goal ComMark has drafted two new Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture (ECDA). As ComMark, the ARC and the ECDA share strategic interests in the promotion and development of emerging and communal cattle farmers in the Eastern Cape, these partnerships make development sense.
